Arnhem Land

Private Service by Air - Cost: $3,500 for up to 5 people
Shared Service by Air - Cost:  $1,680 for 2 people; AU$195 per additional person (up to 16 people)
Operates May - October

Depart Bamurru Plains at 7:15am and take a 20 minute flight by private charter aircraft to Jabiru in Kakadu National Park. On arrival to the airport you will meet up with your guide from Lords Safaris for a day immersed in the Aboriginal culture of Arnhem Land.

On Kakadu’s eastern edge and bounded by the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria, Arnhem Land’s harsh environment resulted in the region’s Aboriginal culture better surviving the impact of European settlement. Access to Arnhem Land is restricted to a select group of guides – they know the people and the country intimately. It is important to visit the region with a guide who understands this rich heritage and respects the wishes of the traditional owners. Your journey today will be hosted by one such guide and in some part, by a local Aboriginal.

Arnhem Land is perhaps the one area in Australia where indigenous culture is still dominant, despite a long history of interacting with other cultures. A traditional Aboriginal guide will show you excellent examples of rock art on Injalak Hill (Long Tom Dreaming), an area that has some of the best rock art examples in Western Arnhem Land and some say Australia. The view from the top of the hill is simply breathtaking, looking out across the floodplains and around the escarpment.

Back at the Injalak Art & Craft Centre there is an opportunity to browse or purchase goods from this non-profit Aboriginal organisation and to watch the locals painting and weaving pandanus baskets.

In the afternoon explore a remote valley - stunning scenery, billabongs, birds and a place to imagine the life of the Aboriginal people who have been at home here for 50,000 years or more.

Lunch and entrance fees as well as guide services are included.

Return before sunset to Bamurru Plains.

Please bring – sun-block, insect repellent, a hat, any personal medications as required, binoculars and camera gear and wear light, comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes or boots

Important

  • A reasonable level of fitness and agility is required
  • Arnhem Land is accessible between May - October
  • Arnhem Land may be closed by traditional owners at any time for ceremonies etc
  • Injalak Art & Craft Centre is closed on Sundays and some public holidays
